principal schools

There is little to guide us to the proper meaning of these 'schools.' A suggestion has been made for each, but it is impossible to say whether Swift had not some special dunces in view under each of these headings. Cf. Tatler, No. 12: 'Gamesters, banterers, biters, swearers, and twenty new-born insects more, are, in their several species, the Modern Men of Wit.'
