The blank probably should be supplied by 'ecclesiastical'; and there is quite as much sarcasm in the scruples which Swift would have us believe that he entertained against printing a word which might savour of irreverence, as there would have been in naming the ecclesiastical along with other posts for which frenzy gave a special qualification. Yet Swift, so far as we can judge, was unconscious that he could give offence to the supporters of the Church!
