This doubtless refers to the Apocryphal books. The use of these had been the subject of some discussion and pamphlet-war towards the close of the 17th century. The Book of Tobit was specially put forward as typical of these books; and the episode of Tobit and his dog no doubt suggested the 'dog-keeper' in 1. 32.
