modern comedies

Refer to the company at Will's. If more than a general reference to the would-be wits is intended by the 'Modern Comedies,' we may suppose Swift to have had in his eye such comedians as Durfey, Mrs. Afra Behn, and possibly Colley Cibber (although he had produced little when this was written). Wycherley was well thought of in Swift's circle: Congreve was his own friend: and Vanburgh, though at times a butt, was not despised.
