Afra the Amazon
Note by H. Craik to Chapter 3 of Battle of the Books

This is Mrs. Afra Behn, whose novelsand plays, as well as her gallantry, illustrate much in the coarser taste of the day. To a modern reader the strangest feature is that she was thought by some of her contemporaries to err by an excess of wit — the quality which seems most conspicuous by its absence from all she wrote.
