On August 6, 1871, an Amnesty meeting held in Phoenix Park was dispersed by the police, and many injuries were inflicted. The affair was the subject of debate in Parliament (August 17), and shortly afterwards the Government gave way on the point and allowed meetings to be held in the Park ( Cook and Wedderburn, XXVII, 176).
